Honolulu Magazine:
“The Drinks
As classical tiki culture slid into decline, its rum drinks went with it, devolving into the bastardized mai tai and other fruity umbrella drinks that nobody takes seriously. But the original tiki drinks were well-balanced, sophisticated cocktails. And they had the best names. Missionary’s Downfall. Vicious Virgin. Cannibal Grog. Cobra’s Fang. Plantation Daze. Strip and Go Naked. Dying Bastard. Hell in the Pacific. Shrunken Head.”

Hawaii 5-0 has the most jaw-dropping product placement EVER.

The evolution of Hawaii 5-0’s product placement in less than two seasons is nothing short of…wow.

These shots of the Microsoft Windows 7 phone and SkyDrive are essential to the drama of the moment:

Marvel at how the writers seamlessly introduce Microsoft Bing into the narrative:

Can you spot the Subway placement in this scene?

Where are the biggest box office movies (not) streaming?

Media_httpflowingdata_ejzjb

Looking at this list of 2011 top 100 movies available (and not available) for streaming I’m struck by how much moviegoing is an impulse buy. There are many movies on this list I wanted to see when they were out theatrically, but few of them seem essential anymore and even fewer will get my rental dollars. Between time, the cost and hassle of hiring a babysitter, and the crummy conditions of NY cinemas, I just couldn’t get to them but now that they are beginning to become available I’m much more interested in what’s playing theatrically now, what is dominating the cultural conversation than most of these.

Is it time for the studios to grow a pair and release their films day and date home video and theatrical? Would it be so bad if all the crappy cinemas in the country were forced to compete on the experience they offer rather than the exclusivity of the content? I don’t think I would stop going to movies but I know that Hollywood would definitely steal a lot more of my entertainment budget if that were the case. Instead, they keep delaying their movies further and further, making them less relevant to the national/global conversation and this less valuable to the majority of potential moviegoers.

Meet Tikaboo, my very own BlagOPet

I’m at the halfway point of my epic BlagOPet adventure, created by the ultra-talented Haley Moore. Tikaboo is clearly MY pet but I’ll admit to being a lot more optimistic about the new Arrested Development than he is. We’ll just have to take a wait and see attitude towards it.
Check out Haley’s site to see all the other great stuff she makes.
